more memories

Oh, my! This was fun to put together! Perhaps these memories from classmates will inspire you to send in a few recollections of your own:

Steve Green (WI): I remember going to Julian’s for pizza on Broad near Broad Street Station a lot after dates and movies and such. Also to Shoneys out on West Broad. Seems like some guys would always get into fights though. Another place we used to go was Clover Room for their incredible ice cream. Anyone remember Chicken in the Rough? I think it was called Wakefield Inn? How about Wright's Townhouse downtown on Grace Street or Franklin? Great Coney Island hot dogs. Another: Hot Shoppes downtown near Thalhimers, and Park and Shop where those maniacs used to screech tires around the curves and corners as you waited for your car. Bill's Barbecue was another hang-out especially for the hot rods on Saturday night. Remember the Wigwam? My band played there for high school proms. Copper Skillet in Willow Lawn? A gangland type slaying occurred there. That Steak Place , the first place to let you order your steak by number of ounces? And Lums at VCU with hot dogs cooked in beer. Of course who could forget the Lee Art theatre, that place that no one would admit to going (I certainly never went there).

Jerry Shapiro ( Goochland , VA ):  I do remember dances at Tilly's, Tantilla, and Up and Away. I bet I didn't miss a one. They were really something and a great chance to meet other kids from around the city. Can we get

Sebastian and the House Rockers to play at

the reunion, you think? I hear the Hot Nuts are making a comeback, also. My son is a senior in high school this year and I hope his dances aren't as survival-based as those were.

Unnamed Source (FL): I think it was the Up ‘n' Away Dude Ranch where, after we were enlightened by many beers, [one of us] became convinced there was a great danger that out there in the woods "the bears were going to get us." In spite of the risk we continued to party, eluded all bears, and eventually got home safely.

The One Who Conjured the Bears (TN), on being asked about the above story: I remember Up 'n' Away and the bears. It was my first encounter with hard liquor and it was not pretty. A little mercy would be appreciated. The thing I remember most was the pain of wrestling practice the next morning at 7:30 am and

Unnamed Source crawling through my window to get me up. Wrestling practice included a 3-mile run at the end. It is a good thing we were basically indestructible at that age.

reunion registration

At last count, 127 classmates had registered to attend the reunion – including the four above. Sounds like we’re going to have another great party!  (And it’s not too late to register….)

Meanwhile, if anyone who cannot attend wishes to pass along greetings to others through this newsletter, please let us know by emailing forty65@hotmail.com. Thanks!
